Experience the ‘end of the Earth’ by cyling through lush green countryside to Finisterre and then the fishing village of Muxía. Watching the sun sink into the ocean from both of these places is a profound experience and a wonderful way to end your journey.

The Jacobean Way of Fisterra-Muxía is most faithful depiction of the historical cry of the pilgrim, who exclaimed “Ultreia!” (Still further!). And it really is further than the goal in Compostela — after having venerated the remains of the apostle St. James — when many pilgrims decide to discover the end of the world, and do not hesitate to overcome the sacrifices of the harsh days behind them to walk some more days.

It is 89 kilometres to Fisterra and more 30 km to Muxía. The history of this route is a mixture of paganism and a later process of Christianisation. In the twelfth century, Codex Calixtinus already links this Way with Jacobean tradition. Furthermore, two of the most popular religious devotions in Galicia are based in Fisterra and Muxía: the Santo Cristo of Fisterra — of whom Molina (16th century) states that “more pilgrims come to him than to the Apostle” — and the sanctuary of the Virxe da Barca in Muxía.

Accommodation: 2* Hotel

Stage 2: Negreira - Olveiroa (34 km / 21 miles)

Start early as this is a full day’s walk with a gradual but long uphill climb out of Negreira. Enjoy the enchanting walled forest paths, quiet country lanes and beautiful scenery from the ridge. You have one more hill to climb to Monte Aro before descending into the village of Oliveiroa.
Accommodation: 2* Hotel

Stage 3: Olveiroa - Finisterre (35 km / 21,7 miles)

Today’s terrain is much flatter and especially picturesque as you walk amid mountains, windmills and forest then get your first glimpse of the ocean and Cape Finisterre in the distance. After an initial climb through Concorbión, the Way drops back down to the beach and mostly follows the coastline and the long, sandy Langosteira beach to Finisterre, with tantalising views of the cape. The lighthouse that marks the ‘end of the world’ is another 3 km from the fishing village.
Accommodation: 3* Hotel

Stage 4: Finisterre - Muxia (31 km / 19,2 miles)

The extension to Muxia begins at the Baixar Cross in Finisterre and takes you through unspoiled, peaceful countryside with views of the Costa da Morte and plenty of instances of rural lifestyles. End the stage in the lovely town of Muxia and the church of the Virgin of A Barca on the rocky promontory at the other ‘end of the Earth’.
