Instead of beginning your Camino in Porto, why not set off from the beautiful Minho city of Braga? Walk through gorgeous countryside to join the central Way in Ponte de Lima.

You’ll have the opportunity to visit Porto Cathedral before transferring to the village of Mosteiros to start your Camino in a quieter, less urban environment. From here, the countryside becomes increasingly attractive, especially after the atmospheric town of Barcelos. Make your way through rural Minho, often on ancient Roman roads. Soak up the history in Ponte de Lima, admire the views from Labruja Mountain and explore the fortress in Valença before crossing the River Minho, the natural border between Portugal and Spain.

Medieval Tui and its fortified cathedral are the first highlights you’ll encounter in Galicia. Between here and the intriguing city of Pontevedra you will traverse some beautiful stretches of forest and peaceful countryside, with views of the Ria de Vigo lagoon around Redondela. The thermal waters of Caldas de Reis will soothe your feet for the onward journey to pretty Padrón and your ultimate destination of the cathedral in the heart of Santiago de Compostela’s medieval centre.
